AI-Driven IT Assignments Surge 723% as Talent Needs Shift, Allegis Global Solutions Report Finds

Data from Acumen® Intelligent Workforce Platform Reveals Deeper Patterns on How AI is Shaping the US IT Labor Market

HANOVER, Md., February 3, 2026 – Allegis Global Solutions, the leading provider of global workforce solutions, today released its report, “Beyond the Freeze: What Our Data Reveals About AI’s Impact on Tech.” The US tech job market appears frozen, with demand for tech workers flat and quits and layoffs remaining low — a stagnation many attribute to economic uncertainty. However, new data from Allegis Global Solutions’ proprietary Acumen® Intelligent Workforce platform reveals a greater shift: AI is fundamentally reshaping who gets hired, what skills matter and where tech work happens.

Allegis Global Solutions analyzed more than 30,000 IT job assignments from the past two years. The report uncovers patterns within Allegis Global Solutions’ customer portfolio and assesses how these trends align with broader economic shifts to help workforce leaders plan for what’s ahead.

"We're watching entry-level developer roles disappear while AI specialists can't be hired fast enough," said Cory Hansen, senior vice president of North America at Allegis Global Solutions. "That's not a hiring freeze — that's a market transformation. Organizations that balance their immediate need for AI talent with long-term investment in developing their existing workforce will be the ones that thrive."

Some key findings include:

  • Generic coding skills are being commoditized: Postings for generic developer skill sets have fallen 46% since 2022, while assignments requiring AI skill sets have jumped 723%. Companies are hiring for precision, not volume.
  • AI jobs are growing, but still in the minority: AI-related job postings grew from 5% of IT roles in 2024 to 12% in 2025. The shift is real, but most tech work still doesn’t require AI specialization – yet.
  • Entry-level pipelines are shrinking: Entry-level software engineering positions dropped 7% from 2023 to 2025, while total software engineer jobs and mid-level roles inched up by 3% and 5%, respectively. Companies are prioritizing experience as AI automates routine coding tasks.
  • AI expands outside of Big Tech: Nearly half (45%) of AI-related postings now come from non-tech sectors – such as marketing, healthcare and manufacturing – as AI shifts from a niche capability to a core business function across industries.
  • AI hiring is spreading geographically: AI job postings are surging in areas outside of Silicon Valley and Seattle, including LA, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, Boston, Chicago and Raleigh, North Carolina.

“The implications are clear,” said Renee Gorman, senior manager of market analytics in North America. “If you're not upskilling your mid-level developers in AI capabilities now, you'll face a serious talent gap in 18 months. The organizations winning in this market aren't just hiring AI specialists — they're building AI capabilities across their existing teams.”
