Meeting Missions: Examining Workforce Challenges

Our client, a life sciences technology leader, was competing for talent and managing costs in an extremely difficult market. The life sciences industry has faced a challenging few years, marked by talent shortages, supply chain restrictions and growing costs. Employment in the 21 months following June 2022 grew only 0.2% compared to a growth of 15.8% in the preceding 21 months.

In order to navigate – and thrive – in incredibly turbulent times, the company knew it needed greater access to IT and research and development (R&D) talent, better visibility into its total cost of workforce and a top-notch user experience—none of which they were getting from their current provider. As such, they made the switch to AGS Managed Services.

Taking Action: Reengineering Previous Systems

Our first goal in rehabilitating the client’s contingent workforce management program was to build trust and demonstrate our abilities to provide a full-service, vendor-neutral program. At the same time, the client was launching its first vendor management system (VMS) and needed our support to drive user adoption and facilitate a seamless transition from previous methods. To do so, we partnered closely with our client’s training team, creating a sense of trust in the new system as well as building a positive onboarding experience.

Next, we completed an in-depth evaluation and optimization of the client’s supply chain, removing underperforming companies and connecting with trusted suppliers with access to top talent while maintaining vendor neutrality. We also partnered with our client to run a request for proposal (RFP) to identify a payroll provider that could evolve with the program, including independent contractor vetting and future global expansion. This was especially important with the increasing demand for high-level IT and R&D talent in the life sciences space.

Delivering Impact: Thriving to Proven Results

The quality of talent is of the utmost importance to our client. With the previous provider, the client’s internal team complained about the poor quality of talent. Since transitioning to AGS, the talent has been favorably received, with the internal team particularly appreciating the data, resources and information to make more educated business decisions, and thus, better hiring decisions.

The strong communication, collaboration and partnership between the client and AGS is evident in high rates of program adoption and best-in-class scores in AGS’ Voice of the Customer surveys.

As trust has grown, so has spend under management. Today, the program has $27.8 million in spend under management, increasing visibility into their total cost of workforce compared to their previous provider.

AGS is committed to service excellence and evolution. We recently supported cost optimization efforts by implementing a tenure rebate, which returned over $44,000 in cost savings in the first quarter. As the program continues to mature and grow, we’re exploring additional ways to support our client with their goals around visibility and managing costs, including services procurement and global program management.
